ICC to fine PCB if Pakistan pulls out of World T20?

Karachi : Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Shaharyar Khan has admitted that if the national team was unable to participate in next month's World Twenty20 in India, the body could be fined by the ICC.

Shaharyar told the media in Lahore that in case Pakistan pulls out of the World Cup, the PCB would have to pay a penalty to the world governing body of the sport.

"I just spoke to the Prime Minister's secretariat today and until the government has not given clearance to send the team to India for the World T20," Shaharyar said.

"All these stories about the ICC threatening us with legal action or the Prime Minister having cleared the tour are not correct.

"We have sought advice and clearance from the government to send our team to the World event. The Prime Minister's secretariat has said they are reviewing the situation and will let us know soon," he added.

"If we pull out our team from the World T20 then we will have to pay a penalty to the ICC," the PCB chief said without disclosing what the amount could be.

But a reliable source in the PCB told PTI that the government was likely to clear the tour to India.

"It is a routine protocol that the PCB is following but all the vibes from the government quarters is that prime minister Nawaz Sharif will give clearance for the team to go to India," the source said.

Shaharyar said the Pakistan Super League had created the expected hype and given the interest it created at its launch, it is here to stay.

On Monday, the country's Cricket Board said it is not under any pressure from the ICC to send its team and a final decision remains solely dependent on government clearance.

FC Midtjylland vs Manchester United : Preview, Live Telecast, Team News, Prediction

European football is back at Manchester United. Not the competition which a club of such a stature is accustomed to, but the club - and critically, Louis van Gaal - realise that the Europa League is the only way out of what has transpired into a torrid season for the Red Devils.

Their journey in UEFA's second-tier competition begins with a trip to Denmark, where they face FC Midtjylland in the round-of-32 at the MCH Arena.

FC Midtjylland have already ousted English opposition in this season's Europa League - a 2-1 aggregate victory over Southampton in the playoff round which helped them enter the group stage.

With a number of key first-team players absent from Louis van Gaal's side, Midtjylland boss Jess Thorup will be looking to seize this opportunity to upset the odds yet again and take a positive result to Old Trafford next week.

But having played no competitive football for over two months, do they have the quality and the match fitness to beat a Manchester United side currently missing as many as 13 players to injury?

Channel: Ten Action, Ten HD

Kick-Off: Thursday, 18th February - 2330 IST

Venue: MCH Arena

Midtjylland will be missing midfielders Petter Andersson and Jakob Poulsen through injury and suspension respectively.

Manchester United have been dealt a massive blow with the news that captain Wayne Rooney will miss around six to eight weeks of action thanks to a knee injury. Matteo Darmian and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson are United's latest full-backs on the injury list due to a shoulder dislocation and an illness respectively.

Marouane Fellaini also stays back in Manchester due to a muscle injury. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Guillermo Varela, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are the other players missing from the squad. Adnan Januzaj is cup-tied having featured for Borussia Dortmund in the group stage.

Left-back Donald Love, who made his debut against Sunderland at right-back, is likely to start. Youngsters Regan Poole, Joe Riley and James Weir make the trip to Denmark and could possibly make their senior debuts.

FC Midtjylland have not played a competitive fixture since a 1-1 draw against Club Brugge in the group stages of this competition on 10 December- a result which helped them scrape through to the knockouts.

They will obviously be the fresher of the two teams, but with the competitive mindset absent from the Danish side, will they be able to come out all guns blazing against an understrength, yet determined Manchester United?

Last 5 games (All Competitions) : D-L-L-D-W (Most Recent: FC Midtjylland 1-1 Club Brugge)

Manchester United are in a rut at the moment. Their league form is once again wavering away, the injury list keeps growing and speculation about Louis van Gaal's future as United boss just never ceases to fill the back pages. Wayne Rooney's two-month layoff means that he is one of the thirteen players unavailable for selection for the trip to Scandinavia.

A defeat to Sunderland on Saturday sees Manchester United 6 points off Manchester City in 4th with just a dozen league games remaining. Fair to say, they see the Europa League as a more realistic path towards Champions League qualification. Can they forget the horrors of the Stadium of Light and kick off their Europa League campaign with a victory?

Daniel Royer vs Paddy McNair

With Paddy McNair set to fill in at right-back, his inexperience is set to be tested by Austrian winger Daniel Royer, who was instrumental in helping Midtjylland qualify for the knockouts. His pace down the flanks and tendency to try the odd trick or two is set to cause McNair a few problems tracking his runs and keeping up with him.

Whether the 20-year old can match the Austrian in terms of pace and marking is something we will learn over the 90 minutes on Thursday.

PKL: Patna Pirates Leaders stay unbeaten with 36-32 win over Bengaluru Bulls

Patna, February 18 (CNMSports): Defender Mahipal Narwal gave the performance of his life to rescue leaders Patna Pirates from a certain defeat on home soil in the Season 3 of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi with the help of raiders Rohit Kumar and Deepak Narwal. Trailing under the onslaught of the Bengaluru Bulls for almost 30 minutes of the fast paced encounter, the twosome scored at will in the second half to first bridge the half-time gap of 11-20 to inflict an all-out over the losers to turn the match. And just when the fate of Patna Pirates seemed to be hanging by a slender thread Mahipal Narwal drew upon all his experience to trap rival Surjeet Narwal once and substitute Deepak Dahiya twice to prevent any slip up in the dying minutes. To his credit Surjeet Narwal with 14 raid points and a tackle point to add went down fighting like a true soldier. The win, their eighth in nine matches takes Patna Pirates to 43 points while with their sixth loss the Bengaluru Bulls lie seventh with just 13 points, with the consolation point they got today for less than 7-point loss. The situation now looks grim for the inexperienced team from the garden city and their path will be full of hurdles as they attempt to fight their way to a semi-final slot. They made a determined beginning today getting a point off the first raid through Surjeet Narwal and very soon were leading 3-0. But the league leaders managed to equalise in the 7th minute. The score then crept to 6-5 in favour of Bengaluru Bulls by the 10th minute showing the tenseness of the battle. Deepak Kumar had set the stands on fire in the Pataliputra Sports Complex by then with a super raid worth three points to lay the foundation to inflict the all-out over the home team in the 13th minute. There was more in store as the game progressed towards the break.Surjeet Narwal came up with two super-raids. The first of them gave him three points and the next four. The first came before the all-out and the next in the 19th minute following a review after the umpire had awarded three points. However, the review proved more beneficial to the home team. They were successful on three occasions in the second-half and the player who benefitted was Rohit Kumar the top scorer who was constantly getting irritated on not being awarded the bonus point by the match officials. His third review fetched his team two valuable points after his team was all-out again in the 21st minute and was 13-25 down. Those two points would have taken the Bengaluru Bulls further up to 27-22 but then once it became 23-25 the tide turned gradually but surely in favour of the winners. They forced an all-out against their rivals and went ahead 26-25. It was experience versus youth thereafter and Rohit Kumar and the swift footed Deepak Narwal proved their coach Sanjeev Kumar Baliyan absolutely right. He had replaced the baby-faced Pardeep Narwal much early in the match with Deepak Narwal. With the scores at 32-30, Bengaluru Bulls took a time -out and their coach Randhir Singh impressed upon his players to be wary of Mahipal Narwal who specialises in thigh holds. The wily old fox did exactly that to clinch the issue. It was a case of the general Surjeet fighting from the front with troops who still have to understand the nuances of doggedly holding on to a winning position on a battlefield.

INTERVIEW: 'Big Easy' happier on greens after putting blues

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

PACIFIC PALISADES, California (Reuters) - Thanks to a changed grip and different technique, Ernie Els can finally see light at the end of the tunnel after struggling badly with his short putting for much of the past 12 months.

The four-times major champion and former world number one reached his nadir last month when he duffed a putt from just 18 inches at the South African Open at Glendower Golf Club where he ended up missing the cut.

Prompted by his father Neels and fellow South African golfer Nico van Rensburg, Els switched to an unconventional putting grip where his left hand is placed below the right, leading to a welcome return to form at this month's Dubai Desert Classic.

"It's been very nice," Els told Reuters at Riviera Country Club on Wednesday while preparing for this week's PGA Tour event, the Northern Trust Open.

"The greens here are a little bit tricky but I am looking forward to putting, which is what I've been looking forward to for a very long time, just having a good feeling on the greens. It's finally getting there.

"I went through a very tough spell there, especially last year and beginning of this year. Everybody saw that. I was really nowhere and now I feel like I've got some game."

Asked how difficult it had been to cope with a radical change in muscle memory from a conventional putting technique he had used for decades, Els replied: "This feels very natural now and the putting stroke is repeating itself.

"I had never really tried it before. My dad and my good friend Nico both told me to try it so I did. I'm now feeling very comfortable and confident."

The 46-year-old, who has described his 2015 campaign as his worst ever in golf, had plummeted to 205th in the world rankings before he teed it up at the Dubai Desert Classic, where he finished in a tie for 18th.

"It was an exact turnaround from a couple weeks before when I was dreading to get on the greens," said Els, widely known as the 'Big Easy' because of his smooth swing and laidback demeanor. "Now I'm falling in love on the greens again."

Els, a 19-times winner on the PGA Tour, has fond memories of Riviera Country Club heading into Thursday's opening round, having won the tournament here in 1999.

"Riviera is one of my all-time favorite venues," said Els. "When you play the game as long as I have, you're going to have a couple of bad memories here and there, but they are mostly good here."
